4. Model Teks Eksposisi Analitis

Contoh 1

Thesis:

I personally think learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Arguments:

Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample.

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and probably many other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution.

Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture.

Reiteration:

From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning English can be enjoyable and fun.

Example 2

Smoking In Restaurants

Thesis:

Smoking in restaurants is just not on. It must not be allowed because it is rude, harmful to others and dangerous for the smokers.

Arguments:

Firstly, smoking in a restaurant is impolite. The smell of the smoke affects all people and can turn them off their food. People pay to taste good food and not to be put off by foul smelling smoke.

Another reason smoking should not be allowed in restaurant is the harm it can do to others. Passive smoking that is breathing in smoke made by a smoker can lead to asthma attacks and even cancer.

Finally, smoking is dangerous and a health risk to the smokers. Cigarettes cause heart and lung disease and people should not smoke anywhere, not just in restaurants.

Reiteration:

Therefore, smoking in restaurants is impolite, harmful to others and a health risk to the smokers and should not be allowed in any restaurants.

EXERCISE 1

Private schools are schools that are not run by the government. They offer various types of schools and levels of education. Although the government does not directly run the private schools, the government should give more attention to private schools for some good reasons.

Private schools provide parents with an alternative to the state sector, and a learning environment, which might better suit their children. In addition, whilst there are many bad state schools, there are also bad private schools, and some excellent state schools which compete with the best private schools.

The existence of private education can actually be financially beneficial to state schools. The state funds the education system through taxation. Parents who do not send their children to state schools still pay the same taxes. Therefore, there is more money per child in the state sector. There is evidence that a large number of parents, who send their children to private schools, are both 'first time buyers' - i.e. neither parent attending a private school - and not from the privileged elite that the opposition would have us believe.

Based on the above discussion, it is obvious that the government should give more attention to private schools because they also contribute much in the education world.

1.      What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

2.      Why does government must give attention to private schools?

3.      Compare the differences between state school and private school.

4.      Why is the existence of private education actually financially beneficial to the government?

5.      What are the  reasons of parents who send their children to private schools?

EXERCISE 2

Literacy is the ability to read, view, write, design, speak and listen in a way that allows you to communicate effectively. The power of literacy lies not just in the ability to read and write, but rather in a person’s capacity to apply these skills to effectively connect, interpret and discern the intricacies of the world in which they live.

The changes that the English language has undergone over the course of history is staggering. The past decade alone has seen students’ literacy repertoire extend beyond the traditional pillars of reading, comprehension, grammar and writing, to include digital and interactive applications.  With today’s learners faced with a myriad of traditional and digital literacies, how can we as parents ensure that our children develop the skills to effectively navigate and decipher the constant information stream that surrounds them?

Today, many children are being classed as ‘digital natives’ – just as comfortable online as they are offline. The internet enables endless educational possibilities, with constantly evolving information streams, however, the vastness of the internet can be a hindrance to those children who cannot effectively sift through and interpret the material presented. Strong literacy skills are a key tool used when children discern and interpret information, enabling them to utilize the internet to its full potential and making sure that the inevitable ‘digital footprint’ that children will leave, is one that is safe, appropriate, and reflective of their true self.

Ways to support your child’s literacy development.

Studies have shown that children’s motivation and achievement improve when their parents are involved in their education. There are many things that you can do to encourage literacy learning in everyday life. These include:

·         sharing your knowledge and explaining how you use literacy in your everyday life

·         encouraging your child to read and view a variety of texts such as newspapers, novels, comics, magazines, websites, email and timetables

·         encouraging your child to write and design for a variety of purposes using different mediums

·         discussing how texts look different depending on the purpose and audience — for example, text messaging uses different spelling from school projects

·         talking about things that you have read or viewed that were amusing, interesting or useful

·         discussing favorite authors, producers, directors or illustrators and what you like about them

·         discussing new and unusual words or phrases and exploring these through print and electronic dictionaries

·         playing games that develop knowledge and enjoyment of words

·         making use of community resources for information, local and school libraries

Based on the discussion above, it is obvious that the parents should enforce and motivate their children to have a good ability of literacy since born to lead them to get their bright future and protect them from the negative effects.

Answer these questions based on the text aabove.

1.      What is the purpose of the text above?

2.      What is literacy?

3.      What does the words ‘digital natives’ mean?

4.      How can parents  encourage their children’s literacy learning in everyday life? Give three examples!

5.      Why is the role of parents important in developing children’s literacy?
